Are
you a high school student (boy or girl) between
the ages of 14 and 18, have an interest in exploring
careers related to animals, have a desire to
learn and teach about animals, or want to learn
and practice leadership skills? If so, you need
to check us out.
Explorers
spend time at the zoo 3 different ways:
-
Junior
Docents choose an area or animal
that you are interested in and get trained
to educate individuals and groups about them
at the zoo. With enough training and experience
you might, teach guests about the animals,
give live animal talks, host information booths,
or conduct zoo tours for children. Junior
Docents enjoy learning about animals, talking
to people and sharing their enthusiasm about
our zoo.
- Junior
Volunteers primarily
participate in projects that help the zoo achieve
its mission, such as zoo beautification and
keeper support. Also, they may be trained to
help keepers take care of animals needs (nutrition,
habitat, and enrichment). Junior Volunteers
may also assist in office tasks, grounds/maintenance
projects and program research.
- Youth
Officers and Activity Chairpersons
plan and lead the meetings and activities of
the post. This includes Lock-Ins
at the Louisiana
Purchase Gardens & Zoo as well as
road
trips to other zoo's. This is a youth led program
with adult advisors available to facilitate
discussions and help with planning, but decisions
are made and carried out by the youth.
-
Senior Explorers and Advisors
are mentors to the younger explorers. They oversee
the planning and execution of projects at the
zoo and in the community. Senior Explorers must
be 18 or older and Advisors must be at least
21.
Once
registered by paying $20 to purchase a t-shirt,
an Orientation is a must and additional
training will be scheduled for specific activities.
Explorers are recognized based on the number
of volunteer hours they put in (service awards)
and for activities that they plan to lead
(leadership awards) at the zoo.
